The Claremont Graduate University professor spoke with guests as they admired her work during the show’s opening on Thursday, Jan. 28. She also gave an artist talk about how feminism has impacted her youth and the importance of people who identify as women to be able to feel empowered.

Lachowicz works with eyeshadow that she makes herself and synthetic pigments for various purposes in her art.

Each of Lachowicz’s shows is put together with much detail and reflects different aspects of her life.

The title “Context is Queen” was selected by the students in the gallery program, based off of the piece “Con Qué.”

“Con qué in Spanish which is ‘with what.’ [It] forces her audience to think ‘why are we thinking about this?’, ‘why is it important to have context?’, ‘why is it important to think about feminism?’ and ‘why is it important to allow women to objectify themselves if they want to?’,” gallery member Meghan Marshall ’17 said.

“People talk to me about the manufacturing of these [pieces],” Lachowicz said.

When Lachowicz first started working with plexiglass, it took three months of working every day. She used help from outside experts in plexiglass sculpture, but has also made a point to learn how to make the structures herself.

The Eastern Star Gallery’s show “Context is Queen” featuring Rachel Lachowicz closes Friday, Feb. 26.
