As a frequent home baker, I know better than anyone how good a freshly baked good can taste when a stack of dishes isn’t looming in the background. However, the seemingly simple task of acquiring the perfect baked good is not as easy as you might think. So if you happen to be a lazy, sweet treat-loving, logo-obsessed human like me, boy do I have the place for you.
For transparency, I stumbled on this place by accident. It was one of those two-second pauses where you barely catch sight of a building and think, “that looks like a social media post brought to life.” Since my first passing, Gone Bananas Bread has haunted me on every trip to the Brentwood Village. By the fourth time I passed by, I knew I had to find out for myself if Gone Bananas Bread was worth the mental energy.
On a dreadfully sunny afternoon in Los Angeles, I dragged my mom 10 minutes out of the house to indulge my banana bread fantasy. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed. The white exterior provided a perfect backdrop for the orange, yellow and pink neon signs. All of this was framed by two large orange umbrellas and white windows covering the walls, allowing for a peek inside.
When I entered through the towering door, the rows of banana bread sitting behind display cases immediately caught my eye. I saw all sorts of flavors, ranging from blueberry to chocolate chip, with the option to purchase a plain slice on the side. I also noticed limited seating spots, and I appreciated the way the bakery focused on offering customers banana bread to-go.
I opted for a classic chocolate chip loaf — moist, chewy, and filled with perfectly distributed chocolate chips. Because I took the bread home, I ended up popping the slice in the microwave, and throwing a cube of butter on top, which made it even better.
Next, as a self-appointed matcha enthusiast, I had to try their seasonal banana bread matcha latte. I will admit that it was not the best matcha I’d ever had, but the banana-matcha combination was definitely an interesting one. The top of the matcha had banana bread crumbs, which were crunchier than I expected. Once I got past the banana bread crumbs and banana cold foam, the drink was pretty much just your average matcha latte. Overall, I enjoyed the drink; however, it was definitely banana heavy, so unless you are a banana addict, I would advise against the matcha.
I ordered one more banana dessert: banana bread pudding. The banana pudding was layered with banana bread, bananas and custard. The custard, although very flavorful, was incredibly sweet, so I ended up only eating half of the pudding. I was surprised to see custard used, since banana pudding typically includes whipped cream instead.
What stood out through all of the items I tried was how incredibly cute and decorated all of the packaging was. The logo was a little banana with banana sneakers, and this added such a modern and cute energy to all of the cups and bowls. These same bananas also made their way onto some of the walls, extending the theme to the rest of the space.
From my experience with this restaurant, I believe the best course of action would be to take a loaf home to enjoy for a future breakfast. While I enjoyed my matcha and banana pudding, at the end of the day, I recommend getting the bread itself, and devouring it in the comfort of your own home. Upon reflection, this cafe was definitely worth the mental storage, and now the storage space is free to turn to new obsessions.
