As Hurricane Hilary travels up the coast from Mexico, promising heavy rain, rough seas and potential flooding, Southern California is expecting its first tropical storm in 84 years.
Head of School Elizabeth English sent an email to the Archer community Friday, Aug. 18, at 5:32 p.m. following a tropical storm warning for Southern California. In her email, English announced that orientation will be moved from Aug. 21 to Aug 22. Additionally, 12th grade College Jumpstart will now take place remotely at 10:00 a.m Aug. 21.
“There are few days more exciting and, if we’re honest, nerve-wracking than the first day of school, especially for our new students,” English wrote in her email to the community. “Add to it the prospect of a West Coast hurricane (named Hilary – really?!), and my team and I began wondering about the wisdom of trying to hold orientation and 12th Grade Jumpstart in the midst of a once-in-a-century weather event.”
According to English’s email, all after school activities, along with a full rotation of classes and special programming for middle school students, will also be taking place Aug. 22.
“May you and your families have a lovely weekend and remain safe, whatever the weather may be,” English wrote. “The faculty and I will be eagerly awaiting your daughter’s arrival bright and early Tuesday morning.”
The Oracle will continue covering any updates surrounding Hurricane Hilary in the coming days.
