“Sometimes you just need to eat an entire cucumber.”
These words have been playing on repeat ever since an unknown influencer first went viral on TikTok early July. The 23-year-old Ottawa-based “cucumber guy” brought the modest and humble fruit to center stage after posting just a few videos.
Logan Moffitt‘s trademark is simply slicing up an entire English cucumber, placing the slices in a large container and mixing in different sauces and toppings to make cucumber salads. While some recipes are loved, many are ridiculed, posing the question: which recipes are truly worth it?
As a cucumber fanatic (yes, we do exist), I am quite a fan of Moffitt and his brand. But, just like so many others, there are certain recipes that have confused me. So, to discover the truth, I got in the kitchen and put four of his recipes to the test, and now I’m here to give you the full report.
The OG Cukes
His original Asian-inspired cucumber salad contains soy sauce, chili crunch, sesame oil, sesame seeds and rice vinegar. The tangy and salty flavors of the rice vinegar and soy sauce pair perfectly with the buttery, nutty sesame oil and sesame seeds. If you plan to recreate this recipe, I recommend adding each ingredient to taste. If you like spice, add extra chili crunch; if you like salty flavors, add extra soy sauce.
This recipe became an instant favorite of mine, and I enjoy it on a regular basis. It is easy to make and packed with flavors, so I rate it a 9/10.
Miso Cukes
After trying the OG Cukes recipe, I didn’t know how they could possibly get any better. But, the addition of miso paste to the recipe changed this snack from delicious to delectable. Upon getting home from school, I tend to make this recipe on a daily basis and have spread my love for the miso cukes among my friends and family.
Although the cucumber craze may just be a one-time try for many, it most certainly is not for me. I expect to continue making this recipe for years to come. So, without further adieu, I rate the miso cukes a 10/10.
Yogurt Dill Cukes
The Yogurt Dill Cukes are an homage to the classic Greek dip tzatziki. Composed of Greek yogurt, fresh dill, olive oil, salt and pepper, this recipe is a delicious take on the trend. The cold yogurt paired with the fresh dill makes this a refreshing and flavorful snack. If the current recipe isn’t quite flavorful enough for your taste, you can add lemon or lime to the dish.
Even though I loved trying this recipe, I don’t think it will make its way into the regular rotation of my cucumber-eating habits. So, the Yogurt Dill Cukes deserves a rating of 6/10.
PB&J Cukes
The PB&J Cukes were a recipe that I, like many others, was quite confused by. Since when did we decide that it was okay to put PB&J on a fruit like cucumber? But, because of “Ants on a Log” — a classic snack that slathers peanut butter on celery — I decided to give this eclectic recipe a shot. Sadly, my suspicions were confirmed: The PB&J Cukes are not worth a try. Using a cucumber as a vessel to eat peanut butter and jelly feels confusing and wrong, and the watery nature of the cucumber combined with these two flavors was not pleasant. While the cinnamon and salt were a nice touch in theory, in practice, they added to the negative flavor overload in the dish.
I would not wish this recipe on anyone and doubt that I will ever try it again. Because of this, I rate the PB&J Cukes a 0/10.
With the exception of the PB&J Cukes, I urge you all to hop on the cucumber trend bandwagon and test out these different recipes. You can adjust the ingredients, play around with the sizes of the cucumbers and experiment with this simple, highly-underrated fruit.
