The smell of warm apple cider wafted through the courtyard air Friday, Dec. 6, during lunch, as students celebrated Fa La La Friday. This event’s name was coined by senior Student Council representative Maddie Beaubaire and was the senior class’s prom fundraiser.
Beaubaire and the other senior representatives, Sophia Calne and Hayden Seid, said they opted to host a bake sale as their means to fundraise for their prom in April. They attributed this decision to the success of the senior class bake sale fundraiser last year, which raised over $1,500.
Beaubaire, Calne and Seid are all newly elected members of Archer’s Student Council and said they have been adapting to their new positions. Although this was the first event the reps planned alone, they have been a part of Student Council since August and have been working with the rest of the council on various events and tasks. Fa La La Friday was the first time the reps collaborated together to host an event on their own. Calne said she and the other reps began the planning process by thinking about the event as a whole.
“We assigned each mentorship a different food item to bring, so for some mentorships it was drinks, for some it was brownies, cookies or other baked goods,” Calne said. “What that meant, is that each mentorship had some kind of a guideline of what they were supposed to bring so we could make sure we had a wide variety of items to sell.”
Each senior mentorship group was paired with another, so the groups could work in tandem to ensure they brought in enough of each item. Certain groups brewed hot chocolate and apple cider, while others served homemade Rice Krispies Treats and sugar cookies. Calne said the planning process was less stressful than she anticipated. She attributed this to the dynamic between the senior reps and the enthusiastic nature of the grade as a whole.
“We’re really lucky that we have a grade that was really excited about the bake sale and wanted to bring stuff in,” Calne said. “Everyone was super happy to help, and it wasn’t super stressful on our part, because there was so much involvement from our class.”
Similarly, Seid said she enjoyed planning her first event on Student Council and appreciated the willingness of the grade to help out. She also said it was fulfilling to contribute positively to the Archer community.
“It was really fun to watch it all come together,” Seid said. “The event and planning process felt very united and special, and I’m glad that we all got to be a part of it together.”
Beaubaire said the planning process of the event helped the three reps familiarize themselves with each other as leaders since this is the first time the trio has worked together. She said she will take what she learned from this event into the next semester.
“It was our first time — the three of us — having to work together,” Beaubaire said. “So we learned a lot about our different dynamic skills and strengths and about each other as organizers and leaders.”
Overall, the Fa La La Friday bake sale raised over $1,000, an outcome that the three reps were very proud of. Calne said she enjoyed stepping into this new role and appreciates the insights she is gaining.
“[Student Council] has been super fun. It’s great to get a behind the scenes view of everything that goes on at Archer,” Calne said. “It’s been so fun my past few years to come to all these events, and now, my final year, getting to help plan them has been amazing.”
