Archer parent Dr. Bert Mandelbaum released his new book “The Win Within: Capturing your Victorious Spirit” on Oct. 16.

Mandelbaum is an orthopedic surgeon who has been practicing for 34 years. He graduated from the Washington University of Medicine in 1980 and practices at the Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Group.

He currently serves as the Medical Director for the FIFA Medical Center of Excellence in Santa Monica, the Director of Research for Major League Baseball, Co-Director of The USOC CSS National Medical Center of Excellence and also serves on the USOC National Medical Network Advisory Group. Most recently, Dr. Mandelbaum was appointed as Chief Medical Officer for the 2015 World Special Olympic Games.”

Mandelbaum’s book, The Win Within, is about the spirit of victory and competitive determination from a medical perspective. He teaches his readers the importance of approaching life like an elite athlete would approach competition: with tenacity, positivity and a focus on the journey rather than the destination.

In an interview with KCAL 9 News, Mandelbaum stressed the importance of compassion: “We have to learn how to be compassionate and kind to others. There’s always someone who needs us at some time. Compassion is the highest human emotion that we need to have.”

On her dad’s new book, daughter Ava Mandelbaum ’15 said, “I’ve watched my dad work on this for a very long time and I’m very proud of how it turned out.”

In reaction to the book, Dennis Lennon, Director of Athletics at Archer, said, “It’s awesome that somebody who is as studied and as experienced as Dr. Mandelbaum is willing to share.”

Mandelbaum also partnered with Archer Athletics to “institute the FIFA 11+ exercises and do a sports injury prevention clinic with athletes which have taken our knee injuries down to around zero,” Lennon said.
