Recently, I have become absolutely, fullheartedly and, perhaps, scarily invested in “The White Lotus.” One fateful Sunday afternoon, I was scrolling on Max, trying to find a new show. When I saw “The White Lotus” pop up as one of my options, I knew I had to start watching it after hearing so many positive reviews about its unique music and murder mystery premise.
I loved it. I finished the first two seasons within two weeks. Luckily, I didn’t have to wait long for season three. The first episode premiered Feb. 16, and a new episode dropped every Sunday at 6 p.m. Its big finale aired April 6.
This season’s premise follows multiple guests’ adventures at a luxury resort in Thailand called The White Lotus. The story focuses on a trio of friends, a family of five, a couple, two resort staff and a spa worker from season one. However, there is drama surrounding every one of these characters, as none of them are necessarily put together.
The best part about this season is how each character is uniquely their own. More than anything, “The White Lotus” is a character study rather than a fast-paced plot. At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about this, but as I continued to watch, I loved how each character was so well developed with their own personality and quirks.
First, there’s the trio of friends — Laurie, Jaclyn and Kate. Their relationship is toxic, as they each talk about each other behind their backs. Although they put on a facade, underneath it lies a palpable political and social tension.
Then, there’s Saxon, played by Patrick Schwarzenegger, who is the eldest sibling of the family of five. He is not necessarily likable but is spontaneous, so he is also a very entertaining character. The rest of his family also has incredibly niche personalities, which, when combined together, makes them extremely chaotic.
The couple, Rick and Chelsea, are also problematic. Rick, who is a little older than his girlfriend, has an emotional wall, which stems from trauma, and is always moody, quiet and reserved. Then, there is Chelsea, Rick’s young, bubbly, charismatic and very talkative girlfriend. The two do not seem to mesh well, but there are snippets where we see Chelsea cares for Rick and tries to help him break down his emotional wall.
Another pair of interesting characters, the unrequited but, perhaps, budding romance of two resort staff; security guard Gaitok and staff member Mook. Gaitok seems infatuated with Mook. However, Mook doesn’t seem as interested. She pushes him aside romantically while still being friendly.
Spa worker Belinda comes back in this season after starring in the first. Although she works at The White Lotus in Hawaii, she is on an exchange program to learn new Thai massage and spa techniques. She knows one of the guests who is being investigated for killing his wife. Belinda is starting to unravel his secrets.
Seeing these characters interact with each other makes the season all the more compelling. Their interactions are tense and dramatic and often add enjoyable action to the plot.
Besides the characters, one of the main changes was the new theme song, which upset many fans. This season decided to forgo the classic haunting and echoing vocal modulations. When I heard the absence of the vocals, I was very disappointed. However, because I loved the series so much, I decided to give the show the benefit of the doubt and continue binge-watching.
“The White Lotus” is a show filled with twists and turns, interesting storylines and fun characters. I definitely recommend giving this show a try if you haven’t already.
