The Varsity Basketball team travelled to Palm Springs, California over winter break to participate in the Nike Desert Classic Girls’ Division basketball tournament from Dec. 26 through Dec. 30. The Max Preps Holiday Classic is a basketball tournament featuring girls and boys high school teams from all over the country and the world. This year’s tournament was hosted by numerous schools in the Palm Springs area.
The team, led by captains Rachel Magnin ’15, Marcela Riddick ’16 and Hannah Martin ’17, dominated their pool, coming in second place behind Marymount in the championship game. The tournament results were as follows:
- Game 1: Archer vs. Desert Christian Academy, 48-37
- Game 2: Archer vs. Xavier Prep, 44-25
- Game 3: Archer vs. LA Adventist, 48-31
- Championship Game: Archer vs. Marymount, 33-51
The team this year is relatively “young,” according to Head Coach Denny Lennon, consisting of six freshmen and four sophomores.
“I enjoyed seeing the high-quality play of the other teams that were in the tournament in the other divisions,” sophomore captain Martin said.
Martin, Danielle Roberts ’18 and Alex Feldman ’18 received All-Tournament Team Honors for their performances.
Many of the girls’ favorite moments came from off the court.
“I loved bonding with my fellow teammates,” Alyssa Downer ’17 said.
The basketball team’s senior night was last night at Santa Monica College at 6pm against Pacifica Christian. The final score was 51-41.
