On April 25, Archer’s Model UN attended their second conference at Huntington Beach High School with a group of eight girls in ninth and 10th grade. The girls competed against over 300 students from all over Los Angeles.
“They improved drastically from their last conference. Multiple people were just a point away from scoring an award and it was very impressive that they performed so well even without having any professional coaching like the other schools,” said club founder and captain Marine Yamada ’17 in an email interview.
The girls collaborated with different students from high schools all over LA to find solutions to problems regarding Boko Haram and Desertification.
The girls had the opportunity to engage in a formal discussion about issues going on in the world, according to Billie Wakeham ’17 in an email interview.
“The recent MUN conference was a very interesting experience for my partner Sophie Smyth and me… This was our first conference, and we were extremely nervous, but overall Sophie and I felt that this was a better way to become more involved in the global community, even if our solutions are not broadcasted on a global scale,” Wakeham said.
The girls meet in Kathleen Tundermann’s room at lunch on Thursdays. The season is finished for this year, but the girls plan to attend multiple conferences around the LA County next year.
