Sonia Miklaucic ’16, Meghan Marshall ’17 exhibit artwork in Eastern Star Gallery
Student artists Sonia Miklaucic ’16 and Meghan Marshall ’17 displayed their artwork together in the Eastern Star Gallery on May 12. The Gallery Management and Design class chose a sampling of Miklaucic’s drawings and Marshall’s photographs to display together.
“The shadows, movements and colors really worked well together,” Rachel Karasik ’16 said on why the class chose to pair the two artists together.
“What I wanted to do was culminate all of my work with art and my use of light. Light is what I found most prominent in Sonia’s work and that’s what I wanted to tie together in all of my [photographs]; how light brings out different emotions in portraiture,” Marshall said on her inspiration for the photographs.
“I try to bring out different ways to express emotion. When you manipulate your surroundings and light it heightens the emotion that your subject is portraying,” Marshall said.
On her inspiration for her artwork, Miklaucic said, “I don’t know exactly what I’m trying to portray but I’m just really enjoying playing with losing the figure in the shadows. I feel like there are some pieces where you can’t quite figure out what you’re looking at at first and I just really like that, as opposed to doing very realistic work which is what I used to do.
“At first I was actually really intimidated because I’m a big fan of [Miklaucic’s] work and I think she’s so talented,” Marshall said, laughing. “I wasn’t exactly sure how our work would contrast or how it would work together, but I’m really excited to be paired with her and I think that she’s amazing.”
