Students and faculty members participated in a volleyball competition at lunch on Oct. 2. This event was the first student-faculty volleyball game in Archer history. 

Faculty captain Wendy Deming led the Hawt Sauce team to victory and won the overall tournament. In second place, captain Dani Roberts ’18 led the White Team. Tied for third place were the Black Team, with captain Kamryn Bellamy ’18, and the Pink Panthers, led by faculty captain Amelia Mathis.  

Each team captain selected their team members.

Student captains Bellamy and Roberts represented the Junior Varsity and Freshman/Sophomore volleyball teams. Student teams included players from all upper school grades and were composed mostly of members of Archer volleyball teams.

All participants were given two weeks to practice as a team and to make their uniforms.

According to Deming, it was dedication to training and team spirt that made Hawt Sauce so successful. “Our uniforms were everything really,” she said. 

“I think what made the team successful was our coaches, who were three girls on the varsity team, who picked our positions and calmed us down because we were nervous,” Bellamy said. 

Dean of Students Travis Nesbitt’s highlight of the event was seeing everyone’s enthusiasm and excitement about the game. He was surprised to learn he was named MVP of the day by history teacher Margaret Shirk, also known as the commissioner of faculty sports.

Deming’s “final bump over the net to win it all” was Director of Outdoor Education Stephanie Ferri’s highlight of the game.

“I liked getting to have fun with the teachers in a different atmosphere than the classroom,” Bellamy said.

While the Archer community is already close-knit, “This [event] demonstrates that it’s fun to get involved in something so community building,” Deming said.
