Varsity soccer wins Liberty League, falls to Anaheim in playoffs
They won some and lost some — but they did not give up.
On Feb. 7, varsity soccer competed against Buckley in their final Liberty League game. The Panthers were won 3-0.
The win secured Archer the Liberty League championship, which they have won three times in the last four years. The Panthers concluded the regular season with a league record of 8-1-1.
But the Panthers faced adversity prior to the game. Four players on the team’s starting lineup were sick and unable to play.
“We were actually all freaking out a bit because we didn’t have the starting lineup that we were used to,” co-captain Liadan Solomon ’17 said. “Everyone was frazzled and freaking out under the pressure because we knew we had to win in order to [secure] the league championship. I really had to step up as a goal scorer.”
According to Solomon, the team started to relax after they scored their first goal and led 1-0.
“The other two [goals] came sort of quickly,” Solomon said. “I was really proud that we were able to pull out [the win] and take care of business”.
The championship ensured the Panthers a trip into the CIF playoff. They played in the first round on Thursday Feb. 16 at Santa Monica College. Archer fell 0-2 to Anaheim.
“Everyone gave it their all and pushed themselves,” co-captain Caitlin Mosch ’18 said. “Everyone played their role and no one lacked. Everyone gave it all that they had.”
