Restaurant Review: John O’Groats

By Haley Jamieson

John O’Groats Grille and Pub first opened on the corner of Manning Ave and Pico Blvd in 1982. It was located in a small building with a counter set for 20 people. Over the past 30 years, O’Groats has expanded into three storefronts and opened a second location in Encino. Angelica and Robert Jacoby opened the family-owned restaurant that their son, Paul Tyler, now manages.

O’Groat’s, a common brunch location in the Cheviot Hills/Rancho Park neighborhood, offers popular items such as “biscuits from heaven.”  They are served fresh out of the oven, and have a fluffy taste.

The breakfast menu ranges from classics such as “the renowned buttermilk pancakes” and scrambled eggs with a side of bacon to less traditional options, such as Oreo cookie French Toast. The restaurant also offers a Get Fit menu consisting of healthier items, such as egg whites and whole-wheat toast. The lunch options range from sandwiches to salads and fish and chips to Scottish fish tacos.

O’Groats’ smoothies range from Uncle Carl’s Sunrise, a blend of cranberries, oranges, apple juice, honey, and bananas to the Mary Margaret, a mix of vanilla extract, bananas, soy milk and non-fat yogurt. The smoothies are large enough for two people to share.

Although the service is a little slow, the food is worth the wait. John O’Groats adheres to its motto: “Nothing but the best, for the best.”
