Review: Binge-worthy, laugh filled “New Girl” is worth revisiting
Being the new girl is hard, but being the new roommate is even harder.
Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel), nicknamed Jess, is in this position when she moves in with three roommates after breaking up with her longtime boyfriend. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether in 2011, the T.V. show “New Girl” follows a group of four twenty-somethings — Jess, Nick, (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Winston (Lamorne Morris) — living in Los Angeles. Although the show debuted nearly seven years ago, its plot is still more relevant than ever.
While looking for a new place to live, Jess finds these roommates on the Internet, assuming they are women. She soon realizes, however, that they are all men. In the end, she decides to move in with them anyway, hence becoming the “new girl.”
In each episode, the characters confront absurd yet hilarious problems, all of which usually cause them to make entertaining choices. Once in her new living situation, Jess quickly expresses her quirky disposition. At first, Jess annoys her roommates, which is definitely very humorous to watch. However, as Jess and her roommates begin to build deeper connections and friendships, it is really sweet to watch all of the characters grow and change over time.
Although all of the characters are funny in different ways, Jess is by far my favorite, largely due to her perfect comedic timing. Her personality is cringey, but it’s also so light-hearted and fun that it makes you wish you knew her.
I also love Schmidt; he makes a ton of weird, offbeat comments that will make anyone laugh. Ultimately, the show is so comical because of its witty script and random, unexpected scenes. For example, I loved when Jess created a band with a group of local teenagers, but the only instruments they were able to use were bells.
Before watching the show in its entirety earlier this year, I had previously tried to watch “New Girl” and was actually not a fan. However, after giving it a second chance, I became obsessed with it. Within the first 10 minutes, I was crying of laughter. The show has seven seasons, each consisting of 22 to 25 episodes.
Seasons one through five are available on Netflix, and you can watch seasons six and seven on FOX.com. Every episode is approximately 20 to 25 minutes long which is ideal, as each installment is not extremely time-consuming. It’s also a great quick fix when you need a homework break or a good laugh.
The only major critique I have about the show is that there is no overarching story plot, which can get a bit boring and repetitive after a while. Overall though, I highly recommend “New Girl.” It is by far one of the best sitcoms I have watched and genuinely believe it will make anyone crack up.
