Claire Bardin, Macoy Ohlbaum display functional art in senior show
Unlike everyday, plain dish-ware, seniors Claire Bardin and Macoy Ohlbaum instead created bowls, mugs and plates decorated with sea creatures and gold leaves for their joint senior art show.
The exhibit, entitled “Function and Form,” opened on Tuesday, Apr. 24, at 10:00 a.m. in the upstairs gallery. This was the fourth senior show of a series set to take place this year.
Bardin and Ohlbaum shared the inspiration behind their joint display in their artist statements.
“‘Function and Form’ explores the ideas of functionality and simplicity,” Ohlbaum wrote in an artist’s statement. “I was interested in creating simple sets that could be easily [woven] into daily life.”
Ohlbaum said that she hopes her pieces will prompt people to explore the concept of utilitarianism, which she said promotes the greater good.
“I really want people to interact with and use these [pieces] in their daily lives,” Ohlbaum said.
Bardin took inspiration from the ocean, as well as her passion for mugs, to create a set of themed cups, which include representations of mermaids, sea urchins and sharks.
“I wanted to mix the ocean’s wonders with functional pieces that my family and friends can use and enjoy,” Bardin wrote in her artist statement. “Each piece has a different marine theme.”
Ohlbaum and Bardin created all of their pieces in their AP Studio Art class, taught by art teacher Olivia Moon.
“Macoy and Claire knew exactly what they wanted to do at the beginning of the school year,” Moon said. “They started with a simple cup and started to develop them into these functional pieces.”
Ohlbaum and Bardin’s senior show was on display from Apr. 24 to Apr. 27.
