Meet the Candidate: Langdon Janos ’22
May 5, 2020
2020-2021 Exec Board candidates filled out applications for the position. All candidates were given the opportunity to share those responses with the Oracle for the student body to read.
1) Choose a leadership quote and in a short paragraph explain how it applies to your “style” of leadership and why.
This quote really spoke to me for a number of reasons. First, I believe that being a great leader is about inspiring others with your actions. As a leader, I know that if I model the spirit and collaboration and ingenuity that I want to see, it is so much easier for others to join in and do the same. Second, part of effective leadership is being able to delegate instead of dominate. I believe that great things come from truly listening to everyone’s ideas and then working together to pull off something incredible. I am also a huge proponent of cooperation, collaboration, and compromise. The reason we have so many people on Student Council is so that we can build off of each other, and take advantage of each of our strengths so that we can produce the best possible product. Lastly, the quote mentions that leadership is not about intimidation. I wholeheartedly agree with this, and as a leader my number one goal is to make sure that everyone feels comfortable enough to share their ideas. No one should ever feel less than, or afraid of judgment. As a leader, I do believe that I am able to foster an environment filled with inspiration and cooperation.
2) As a student council member, what important goals would you have for Student Council? For Archer?
I have been on Student Council since I came to Archer in sixth grade, and I remember feeling so nervous at every meeting that I wouldn’t ever share my ideas because I thought that I was too young, and that nobody wanted to hear from the middle schoolers. As a member of Exec Board, I would never want anyone (no matter their grade) to feel like they couldn’t share or they didn’t have a place in the group. Student Council should truly be a family, where we all feel safe and look out for each other. I’ve also noticed as a rep that sometimes there isn’t a huge heads up about when we’re needed to come in outside of our weekly meetings, so I want to make sure to organize a schedule as far out in advance as possible, so that hopefully more of the reps can make it to those extra meetings.
One of my goals for Archer is to create a discount at the servery for students who bring reusable containers/plates for food bought on campus. Given that we are such an environmentally conscious school, why not give a little incentive to create less waste every day? Another one of my goals is to create an Archer app. On the app we could have the weekly lunch menu, reminders about upcoming events (I want to promote extracurriculars like sports games or performances more as well), your personal schedule, as well as link it to the learning hub. I think it would be very helpful to have all of that information in one place that you can check easily on your phone if you’re on the go, or on your way to class.
3) What are your plans for increasing school spirit and student participation at Archer?
Honestly, I feel like school spirit is incredibly high and I would love to keep it that way. As a member of exec board, I would continue to have high energy and enthusiasm about every event just like the exec boards have done in the past. Also, since I have been a rep for so long, I would be able to share my tips and tricks with the newer reps on how to keep grade spirit up.
I do think we could still increase support for after school events such as sports games or performances. We should promote these events at Upper School meetings or on the Student Council instagram.
4) What role(s) do you think Student Council should play at Archer? Is Student Council currently fulfilling that role? If not, what changes do you propose to make it happen?
I think Student Council should act as a liaison between students, and the faculty and administration. We should make ourselves available to students so that they can come to us with any ideas, concerns, or anything in between, and we can promptly address them. Additionally, Student Council members should set the tone for the rest of the school. They should be the most excited about every event, the most decked out in costumes, and the ones constantly supporting other girls in their passions. I do think that Student Council is fulfilling these roles, and I plan to continue to fulfill them.
5) Why do you want to be on Student Council, really?
Student council is something I have always loved, and have become really passionate about. I love that I am able to connect with other grades as well as be a leader for my peers. I also adore Archer, so I want to be on the team that strives to make it an even better place for students.
