7 Reasons to Love Winter in Los Angeles

By Madison Richardson

1. Starbucks’ Seasonal Changes

As part of a 25-year old tradition, Starbucks serves seasonal drinks, such as the Caramel Brulée Latte, Peppermint Mocha, Gingerbread Latte, and the Eggnog Latte. Nothing is more delectable than a cup of coffee on a winter day. Although the term “winter” is somewhat of a misnomer. Which brings me to my next point…

2. Rain

Unless you live in the Santa Monica Mountains, seeing snow in Los Angeles is almost as unlikely as a zombie apocalypse. Perhaps that is a bit of an exaggeration—the last time it snowed in Downtown Los Angeles was Jan. 9, 1949, according to the National Weather Service. California in December does not fit the stereotypical winter ideal.

But during winter, there is always some rain. Students in Southern California accessorize their uniforms with wool scarves and tights in order to combat the frightening 60°F and enjoy those rare raindrops.

3. “Snow”

You might be confused by this “perk” of winter. Although it would take an Ice Age to see even see snow here at Archer, if you go to the Grove between Nov. 18  and Dec. 24, “snow” falls from 7 pm to 8 pm. Leave it to Los Angeles residents to replicate snowfall — this event at the Grove is contrived, odd, and totally necessary. They are always eager to celebrate the holiday season.

4. Malls

Other holiday-related festivities at the Grove — aside from the so-called “Magical Snowfall” — include Santa’s Cottage, frequent music performances, and an hundred foot tall tree adorned with twinkling lights. But the Grove isn’t the only mall which transforms during the holiday season. From Nov. 7 to Dec. 24, the Beverly Center creates a walk-through ice palace. Lights have gone up all over Los Angeles — the Third Street Promenade lit their tree on Dec. 12. Menorah Lighting Celebrations also took place at the Santa Monica Place at sundown from Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.

5. Finals

Let me clarify before the over-caffeinated and exhausted high schoolers become enraged—finals aren’t fun. From aggravating Scantrons to hours of testing and the looming, slowly-approaching winter break, it’s easy to bemoan this week. However, there are some positive aspects of finals week. It’s Pajama Day every day — that means knit sweaters, Uggs, and other means of achieving warmth and happiness during a week ridden with stress. And everybody brings food! Who doesn’t love sitting in pajamas and making waffles in the Student Courtyard?

6. Amusement Parks

Knott’s Berry Farm, Disneyland, and other LA area amusement parks are all decorated for the holidays.  From nighttime parades to elaborate decorations, the amusement parks in Los Angeles County certainly enjoy their share of holiday cheer.

7. Other Perks

Hot chocolate, apple cider, and pies! The winter season is the all-you-can-eat time of the year. The beginning of the holiday season also signifies the approach of New Year’s. Don’t worry about failed New Year’s resolutions—just enjoy the winter season because it doesn’t last long.
