A couple of weeks ago, I was scrolling through my Snapchat stories, and something special caught my eye — a screenshot of The Weeknd’s new album “Hurry Up Tomorrow.”
Each of the album’s 22 songs are a window into The Weeknd’s artistry and unique talent. Following his hit albums “Starboy” (2016) and “After Hours” (2020), The Weeknd released “Hurry Up Tomorrow” Jan. 31.
The album started with “Wake Me Up,” a track that featured Justice, a Grammy-winning Indie-artist duo. The song was an interesting intro to the album, with the second minute solidifying the harmony and catchy rhythm.
The album’s second track is “Cry For Me,” a song that is almost too catchy. Break-up songs are usually sappy and depressing, but this song is quite the opposite. This is definitely a must-listen.
“I Can’t F***ing Sing” is a funky track that may allude to when The Weeknd lost his voice playing at SoFi Stadium. I find this odd display of creativity unnecessary and a bit uncomfortable, as The Weeknd vents to the microphone for 12 seconds.
Featuring Brazilian artist Anitta, “São Paul0,” plays as the fourth track. This collaboration was super fun with Portuguese being incorporated into the lyrics, adding flavor to the otherwise bland beats. “Until We’re Skin & Bones” is next on the album, another short 22-second track of techno. I found this seemingly random track compelling — its purpose is uncertain, but it adds uniqueness to the album.
Approaching the middle of the album, “Opening Night” is a shorter track that matches the repeating techno vibe. “Reflections Laughing,” featuring Travis Scott and Florence and the Machine, explores the weight of success and the loneliness it may bring. Adding Scott to the track is an automatic bonus, making the song all the more a fun listen.
“Enjoy The Show,” featuring rapper Future, is a five-minute love song that includes an interesting dynamic due to its immersive beats and diverse genres. The inclusion of artists in this album is amazing, and including Future in this song added pizazz to the track.
Providing a slower start and a more high-noted, upbeat listen after the intro, “I Can’t Wait To Get There” is a track focusing on the burdens and motivations of fame. The harmony between the different notes and The Weeknd’s voice in the song is amazing and provides a truly special synchrony.
“Timeless” featuring American Rapper Playboi Carti, is the hit of the album without a doubt. Viral on TikTok, the song gathered the attention of many listeners, including me. It is one of the more upbeat tracks on the album, and it will definitely get stuck in your head.
Reaching the last third of the album, “Take Me Back To LA“ is a song about reminiscing about innocent and happy memories.
“Give Me Mercy” includes more of this album’s biblical component and depicts the overall message of forgiveness, and “Drive” depicts how fame is a disease, and the only way to survive is to take your life day by day. Both songs depict the essential message of letting go to reach something better.
Featuring Lana Del Rey, “The Abyss” is a song about dedication to a relationship, despite overwhelming chaos. The beat drops, symphony and lyrical genius in this song are incredible. Bringing another artist to share this piece adds depth and another perspective. However, I would have loved to hear Lana earlier in the song.
“Red Terror” is a track with techno-components yet again, but although the album is already filled with these moments, they all still add such a unique and almost ethereal vibe every time. The track touches on parenthood and finishes with The Weeknd talking at the microphone for a bit too long, which I’m not a fan of.
Cueing the end of the album, “Hurry Up Tomorrow” is a more sincere and slow song. The song focuses on bettering oneself for family and what the future may bring. The track is a fantastic end due to its amazing lyrical components, beats and rhythm.
All in all, the album was a rollercoaster of emotions. From love to hate and upbeat to mellow, each song hooks the listener along for a remarkable journey. Although some songs were a bit funky, each track had at least one moment where I was shocked in the best way possible.
Summary
The Weeknd released a 22-track album, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” Jan. 31. The album includes diverse rhythms to match lyrics that reflect hardships with love and fame, definitely making me want to listen more.
