Broadcast: Middle schoolers share opinions, predictions about 2024 presidential election

With the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaching, The Oracle sat down with six middle school students to discuss their thoughts on the two candidates, Harris’ and Trump’s performances in debates, and the issues they would like to fight for in our country.

Runners from Brentwood School, Campbell Hall, Crossroads School, Viewpoint School and Windward School rush off the starting line on Sept 30 at Brentwood School, beginning the race. Smith said the team has to put in the work to be successful in a new league. “This is our second season in the Gold Coast League,” Smith said. “It’s more challenging because the competition is better.”

Sophomore Sophie Herbert said she had many preconceptions about the standardized test before taking it, but it didn't feel like it was as difficult as she expected it to be. "I think when you actually sit down to take the test, it's not as bad," Herbert said.

Lola Thomas ('26) discusses press freedom for private schools at a workshop. In the United States, 18 states have laws protecting student press freedom, in addition to the First Amendment, which applies nationwide. The law covers students in private and public schools, however private schools are independent from the government, putting them at risk for prior restraint. Thomas, along with three other editors from The Oracle, presented to inform private school journalists of their rights.

Students fold vibrant tissue paper into flowers to add to Archer’s community ofrenda. Making an ofrenda is a traditional practice during Día de los Muertos, where families will lay photos and momentos on a decorated table to remember and honor the lives of deceased loved ones. Hermanas Unidas executive board member Alondra Alcala said the celebration is "a way for people to honor loved ones, especially when healing from a loss."

Sydney Tilles joined the Oracle as a staff reporter in 2022, became a senior reporter in 2023 and has been the outreach editor since 2024. She is the president for Archer’s Model United Nations, she is on the Activism Board for the Artemis Center and she participates in Night of Dance. She has a passion for government, politics and criminal justice reform. In her free time, Tilles enjoys cooking, baking, playing tennis and spending time with her dog.
