Trying to convince my mom to buy the $200 Ninja Creami was not an easy task, but, finally, a Walmart sale and one-day shipping was enough to get her to click purchase. I had first heard of this magical device around a year ago when it was making the rounds on social media, particularly TikTok.
The Creami is a blender-type device that can turn almost any frozen base into milkshakes, ice cream, sorbets, smoothies and more. It only takes three easy steps to create a wide variety of delicious frozen treats. First, you create a base, such as fruit or a milk and sugar combination, and then let it freeze for up to 24 hours. Finally, you pop it in the machine and choose a setting and, voilà, you have your own unique frozen treat.
Once it was in our kitchen, we were itching to make our own ice cream. All of the elaborate recipes online seemed a little daunting for our first time, so we settled on making the classic chocolate and vanilla included in the device instructions. It was a simple recipe of a little bit of cream cheese — which I was a little hesitant to add since I’m not a big fan, but you really can’t taste it — milk, sugar and any flavorings you want. We went with vanilla extract and cocoa powder.
The machine itself was very easy to set up; all you have to do is unwrap the hand-held container and plug in the body of the device. The hardest part was waiting 24 hours for the bases to freeze, but once that was over, all we had to do was secure the container in the blender and press the ice cream setting.
It took around 30 seconds to blend, and we were amazed by how delicious and smooth it was. We added crushed Oreos and selected the mix-in setting to incorporate the sweets into the chocolate base. After that, it was time to sample the finished product, and it was well worth the wait. As someone who considers herself an ice cream connoisseur and has had dessert after dinner a part of her routine since early childhood, I was genuinely impressed with how delicious the product was. There weren’t any chunks of the ingredients left unblended, which was surprising considering how quickly it took to blend everything together. It honestly gave the store-bought ice cream in my freezer a run for its money. Just one blend made a lot of product, and there was still room to add more to the base when we were originally making it. It took my family a couple of days to finish both of the containers.
Ninja advertises the Creami not just as an indulgent ice cream maker but also as a device to make healthier treats, such as smoothies and lower calorie “lite” ice creams. You can add whatever mix-ins you would like, such as nuts, fruits and candies, so you can use it for different types of meals and not just dessert.
There are so many recipes I have saved from all different types of social media platforms and am eager to make. Now I just have to convince my mom to buy the soft serve attachment. If you are looking for a unique yet usable gift, or even just something to spoil yourself with, the Ninja Creami should be at the top of your list.
