Este verano, me sumergí en una cultura nueva.

Viajé a Cabo, México, por cinco días durante agosto. Una actividad que mi familia y yo hicimos fue visitar la Caminata de Arte en San José del Cabo. Este evento toma lugar cada jueves entre las 5 y las 9 de la noche en junio y noviembre. La Gallery District Association creó la Caminata de Arte con la meta de apoyar a artistas locales y mostrar el corazón y alma de esta parte de Cabo. La popularidad ha aumentado a lo largo de los años, así que ahora el gobierno local cierra la calle mayor de Álvaro Obregón para el evento.

Era una noche bonita y llena de arte, música y amor.

Cuando estaba en la Caminata, observé tiendas con obras de arte únicas como obras cerámicas, jarrones y vitrales. Quería saber más detalles sobre las obras de arte y escuchar a las historias de las personas en las tiendas. Por eso, entrevisté dos tenderos.

Primero, conversé con José Alberto López. López ha trabajado en su tienda de pinturas desde hace tres años, y su estilo favorito es el surrealismo. Específicamente, a López le gusta cuando obras de arte exploran ideas filosóficas. López me describió la colección de arte en su tienda.

“Representamos a más de 15 artistas,” López dijo. “Todos de ellos mexicanos de diferentes partes de la Ciudad de México … de Guadalajara, Monterrey, Oaxaca, y básicamente somos una galería de arte contemporáneo. Manejamos estilos desde el abstracto, el arte pop, el surrealismo, el realismo, el expresionismo y el cubismo, y siempre tratando de darles oportunidades a artistas emergentes.”

Finalmente, López habló sobre su pintura favorita de la tienda: “Camino al Jardín” de Jacinto González Gasque.

“Podemos ver una luz,” López dijo. “Transmite un cierto tipo de sentimiento y es … lo bonito de del impresionismo.”

La segunda persona que conocí se llama Christian Mercado. El tiene una tienda con papel amate. Mercado dijo que para crear papel amate, necesitas convertir la corteza del árbol y poner estampados y colores en un diseño. Según un artículo sobre este estilo, el papel amate es especial porque “tiene una rica e interesante historia de miles de años envuelta en magia, religión y tradición.” Creo que este proceso es muy interesante y fue un estilo nuevo para mí.

Mercado contó que el papel amate es una parte importante de las ceremonias religiosas otomí. Pero empezó a trabajar en su tienda por accidente.

“Yo cubrí a un amigo, y a mi amigo lo atraparon faltando a trabajo y me encontraron a mí, y me dijeron que si quería trabajar aquí, y dije que sí,” Mercado dijo. “Ahora llevo unos años trabajando aquí y me he vuelto parte de la familia.”

Mercado dijo que la tienda es popular en la Caminata de Arte porque esta en el centro y es más turístico allí. En general, también dijo que este evento es más popular este año en comparación con antes.

Me encantó mi tiempo en la Caminata de Arte porque abrió puertas a artistas emergentes y su trabajo. La recomiendo para personas que quieren aprender sobre la cultura local de San José del Cabo y disfrutar una noche vibrante.

Review: A vibrant night: Art Walk showcases artists, culture in San José del Cabo

This summer, I immersed myself in a new culture.

I traveled to Cabo, México, for five days in August. One activity that my family and I engaged in was visiting the Art Walk in San José del Cabo. The event takes place every Thursday from 5-9 p.m. in June and November. The Gallery District Association created the Art Walk with the goal of supporting local artists and sharing the heart and soul of this part of Cabo. The popularity of the event has increased over the years, so local government closes the major street, Álvaro Obregón, for the event.

It was a beautiful night, filled with art, music and love.

When I was in the street, I observed shops with unique pieces of art such as ceramics, vases and stained glass. I wanted to learn more details about the history behind the art and hear the stories of the people in the stores, so I interviewed two shopkeepers.

First, I spoke with José Alberto López. López has been working at his painting store for three years, and his favorite style is surrealism. More specifically, López likes when paintings explore philosophical ideas. López described the collection of art in his shop.

“We represent more than 15 artists,” López said. “All of them [are] Mexicans from different parts of México City … from Guadalajara, Monterrey, Oaxaca, and, basically, we are a contemporary art gallery. We handle styles from abstract, pop art, surrealism, realism, expressionism and cubism, and [we’re] always trying to give opportunities to emerging artists.”

López talked about his favorite painting in the store: “Camino al Jardín” by Jacinto González Gasque.

“We can see a light,” López said, pointing at the top of the painting. “It conveys a certain type of feeling and this is … the beauty of  impressionism.”

The second person I met was Christian Mercado. He works at a shop selling amate paper — a traditional, handmade Mexican paper made from wood. Mercado said that to create amate paper, you need to convert tree bark and put prints and colors in a design. According to an article about this style of art, amate paper is special because “it has a rich and interesting history of thousands of years wrapped in magic, religion and tradition.” I think this process is very interesting and I had never heard of it before.

Mercado said that amate paper is part of the religious ceremonies of the Otomí. But he started to work at this store by accident.

“I covered for a friend, and my friend got caught missing work and they found me, and they asked me if I wanted to work here, and I said yes,” Mercado said. “Now I’ve been working here for a few years, and I’ve become part of the family.”

Meracado said that his store is popular in the Art Walk because it is in the center and it is more tourist-filled there. Overall, he also said that the event was more popular this year in June compared to last year.

I loved my time at the Art Walk because it opened doors to emerging artists and their work. I recommend it for people who want to learn about the local culture of San José del Cabo and enjoy a vibrant night.
