‘Hawt’ no more: students defeat reigning faculty team in third annual student vs. teacher volleyball game
Students filled the Sport Court in colorful attire on Oct. 6 to watch the student vs. faculty volleyball game. After 40 minutes, the red team was named champion, becoming the first student team to win the annual game.
Student council assigned each teach a color and senior coach from the varsity volleyball team. Locke Luhnow ’18 coached the black team, Macoy Ohlbaum ’18 coached the pink team, Rachael Boehm ’18 coached the purple team and Cydney Davis ’18 coached the red team.
Each faculty team was captained by a teacher. Wendy Deming led the black time, nicknamed “Hawt Sawce,” and Amelia Mathis led the pink team, nicknamed “The Pink Panthers.”
This is the third annual student vs. teacher volleyball game, and 2017 was the first time a student team came away victorious.
“It felt great finally beating the teachers for the first time,” Josie Garcia-Euyoque ’18, a member of the red team said. “We are a part of history now.”
She attributed the red team’s success to a team effort and Davis’ “great” leadership.
Pink team coach, Macoy Ohlbaum ’18, enjoyed an alternative perspective while participating in the game.
“It was really interesting to be in a coaching position, rather than as a player, because you get to see a whole different side of the game,” Ohlbaum said. “It was super nice having the whole Archer community back on the sport court supporting.”
Student council organized the event as a way to encourage interaction between faculty and students outside of a classroom atmosphere. Lucia Barker ’18, an Executive Board Member, helped to organize the event.
“As student council, we wanted to make sure [that] the final would be students versus teacher, and the end result was perfect. Having the red team defeat ‘Hawt Sawce’ was both heartbreaking and amazing,” Barker ’18 wrote in an email interview. “The students were absolutely amazing, as were the teachers…It is only our third annual game, so I am excited to see what student council does with it next year.”
