Review: Justin Bieber’s album ‘Changes’ reveals his growth as a singer, person
May 31, 2020
I have loved Justin Bieber ever since I heard his first album, “Justin Bieber My World 2.0,” when I was just 7 years old.
When I heard that Bieber was coming out with his fifth album, “Changes,” I was expecting songs similar to his past albums featuring his youthful voice and soulful music melodies. Instead, we got songs that are heartfelt, showed emotion and reveal the true man he has become. Bieber has gone through many changes in the past 10 years, and that is ultimately reflected in this album.
The album is composed of 17 songs, and each song contains a different message that Bieber is trying to convey to his audience.
“I definitely have grown up in front of the world,” Bieber said in the album’s Editors’ Note on Apple Music.
This is truly an understatement when you consider how he’s helped to shape the world around him, and how the world has shaped him.
According to the Editors’ Note on Apple Music, his confessional fifth album, “Changes” is an arms-wide-open tribute to his wife, Hailey Bieber, as well as to his faith, and describes the healing he found from each.
“This album is more than the end of an era to Justin as a rebellious playboy and pop maximalist — it also marks the beginning of a more focus, settled life,” the Editors’ Note writes.
The song “Confirmation” shows how he praises the importance of slowing down and being present in one’s life. With lyrics such as ‘Take a moment to cherish this space, So quick to move forward no pressure and we got the rest,” Bieber expresses how you need to take time for yourself and remember those who are there for you in your life.
According to Apple Music, a turning point came when he performed with Ariana Grande at the 2019 Coachella music festival as her surprise guest.
“I saw how people reacted when I went onstage. It gave me a boost of confidence and reminded me, ‘Oh, this is what I do. This is what I’m good at. I don’t need to run away from it.’ I was running away. But when something’s hard, it’s almost like we need to run towards the pain and run towards the hurt rather than run away from it,” Bieber said.
The beat, production style, and background noise of Bieber’s new album captures and represents his maturity towards his songs. The beats of every song really have a great melody and tone that pulls the listener in to listen to more. The melody and tone of each song really has impacted how I see the album as a whole.
The song “Changes” represents how when someone changes it does not mean they change who they are as a person. The lyrics, “Though I’m going through changes, Don’t mean that I changed” really expresses how Bieber has changed towards society but he feels that he has not changed as a person.
From the time that I was dancing in my room to Justin Bieber’s first album when I was a kid to now, I can truly say that he produces amazing music that has such a great impact on people around the world. Justin Bieber will always be apart of me and my childhood even as I experience changes in my life, just like him.
