ARCHER SENIOR NIGHT FRIDAY, JANUARY 31 AT SMC
Varsity Teams take on New Roads – Soccer kicks off at 6:00pm, Basketball tips off at 7:00pm
Santa Monica – The Archer School for Girls (Brentwood) varsity basketball and soccer teams will take to their respective fields of play Friday night at Santa Monica College (SMC) for “Archer Winter Senior Night 2014″. Both teams will play non-league games against New Roads of Santa Monica. The Archer teams will both be wearing their “Official Adidas Purple Throwback Uniforms” for the occasion. Recognition of soccer senior and captain Daniela Jiminez will take place on the field just prior to the 6:00pm kick-off, while recognition of basketball senior and captain Maia Barnett will take place in the gym just prior to the 7:00pm tip-off. The one and only “Big Game Jake” Downey of MaxPreps Sports will be on hand to cover the event. SMC is located at 1900 Pico Blvd. in Santa Monica. There is public parking on Pico Blvd., however, metered spaces along Pearl Street near 17th street is the most convenient place to park.
ARCHER SOCCER TEAM IS DEFENSIVE…AND IN FIRST PLACE!
Stellar Defense has led Squad to a 6-0 Mark in Liberty League Play
Brentwood – The Archer soccer team has won as many CIF championships as they have allowed goals this league season…ZERO! That said, this years team just may be on track to tally one on the CIF championship side of the column. Archer’s defense this season has been nothing short of spectacular, the squad has scored 24 goals in league and given up none, resulting in a 6-0 league record. A showdown is on the horizon next week against Santa Clarita Christian, also 6-0 in league. The defense is led by versatile junior center defender and captain Yasmeen Namazie, an all-around talented athlete that also plays premier level club soccer. Center midfielder Rachel Pike (9th grade) has transitioned out of goal to center-mid to make way for junior goalie Hillary O’Connor. The switch has inspired the defense to a record breaking level. On offense, junior Claire Kristoff leads the team in scoring with 14 goals, while sophomore Eileen Gonzales leads the team with 10 assists. The team wraps up league play on campus February 11th, and will start the CIF playoffs on February 19th.
BASKETBALL WINS THREE OF FIRST FOUR LIBERTY LEAGUE GAMES
Three Wins Come on the Road for Young Team
West Los Angeles – With a victory over Yeshiva University (Los Angeles), the Archer basketball team ran their Liberty League record to 3-1. After victories last week at Glendale Adventist and at Holy Martyrs (Encino), the girls returned to the top 20 in the latest CIF-SS 4A poll. The Archer cagers have played an ambitious schedule this season, with tournaments at Brentwood School, Milken School and the traditional winter break “travel tournament”. This year, they became the first sports team from Archer to travel outside of California, playing in the Cactus Jam Phoenix Hoop Classic in Arizona. The team is anchored by three-time All-CIF senior Maia Barnett, who has been selected to each of the All-Tournament teams this season. Barnett, averaging an astounding 22 points (ranks 31st in California for all schools), 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals per game, is the lone senior on the team. She has led the squad to surprising victories not only in Liberty League play but over L.A. city teams Canoga Park and Kennedy (Granada Hills). Co-captain Rachael Magnin is the only junior on the team, while the rest of the team is comprised of two sophomores and seven freshmen. Magnin is scoring 6 points and blocking 3 shots per game, while 9th grader Hannah Martin is leading the way for the under class-men with 6 points and 11 rebounds per game. Archer will finish up the regular season at the Liberty League Conference Tournament in Burbank February 10th through 13th before the start of the CIF playoffs on February 20th.

Archer’s All-Time Leader in Points, Rebounds, Assists, Steals and Blocks is Well Worth the Price of Admission
Glendale – With 4:27 remaining in the first quarter of Archer’s opening Liberty League game at Glendale Adventist Academy on January 21st, Archer senior Maia Barnett called out play “31”, dribbled to the right and hit a signature 15 foot jump shot. It marked a milestone that may never be repeated at the school. It was the three-time All-CIF star’s 1500th point. In the spirit of that significant moment, here are 1500 reasons to watch Maia Barnett play ball:
1500. She has scored 1,595 points, grabbed 663 rebounds, collected 281 assists, stole 331 times and rejected 50 shots in her career.
1499. She holds a 3.5 GPA, is part of the Ambassador Program, Leadership Team, Diversity Committee and Student Council.
Whew, already getting tired…okay, recalculating…In honor of Maia’s soon to be retired #15 jersey, here are the top 15 reason’s to watch Maia play:
15. This season, she averages 22 of the teams 40 points.
14. She fills up the stat sheet, grabbing 9 rebounds, dishing 4 assists and stealing 4 per game this year.
13. Albert Einstein’s IQ was only half of Maia’s basketball IQ.
12. She has only fouled out of 2 of her 90 career games.
11. She’s a 4-sport athlete, including an All-League selection in Volleyball and Track.
10. She has played every position on the floor, including point guard…leading a veteran team as a freshman, and a young team as a senior.

ARCHER BASKETBALL TEAM TO PLAY IN LIBERTY OUTDOOR CLASSIC AT VENICE BEACH
The 2nd LOC @ VB to Feature Archer Hoopers vs. Pacifica Christian on Saturday at 12:30pm
Venice Beach – In the spirit of the NHL Outdoor Classic, the Archer basketball team will play in the 2nd installment of the Liberty Outdoor Classic on Super Bowl weekend at the iconic Venice Beach basketball courts. The courts are home to many popular films and television shows, including the 1992 film “White Men Can’t Jump”. The LOC @ VB will host a docket of games, all sanctioned by the CIF-SS. Archer will play against league rival Pacifica Christian at12:30pm.
ARCHER STAFF AND ALUMNAE FALL TO VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM AT 3RD ANNUAL JHI
Santa Monica – For the first time in the three year history of the Jimmy Hausberg Invitational (JHI), the Archer varsity basketball team came up with a victory, winning 48-43 at Santa Monica College on December 20th. The JHI was begun on a challenge from Archer parent and supporter Jimmy Hausberg in 2011. Jimmy’s daughter Danielle was the captain of the 2011 Archer team that posted a school record 18 wins and and advanced to the CIF quarterfinals. The Hausberg team includes Archer coaches, staff and alumnae playing against the varsity basketball team. The buzz from the event led to coverage from Maxpreps, the leader in High School sports reporting.
