Seniors Lead Tennis to a Successful Season

Seniors Lead Tennis to a Successful Season

Archer tennis started off the season with a second-place victory at the first serve tournament in Torrance. With help from new members (the five feisty freshmen: Christian Lunhow ’16, Sarah Boehm ’16, Gaby Sumpter ’16, Sofia Garrick ’16, Molly Egger ’16, and jubilant junior Laura Daly ’14), the team was able to coalesce and have one of their best seasons ever.

Team captain Chloe Mills ‘13 agrees: “This year was by far my favorite tennis season. As a team we really gelled and supported each other throughout the entire season. Being their captain has been amazing and I’m going to miss being part of this team but I know the team will go on to have an amazing season next year as well!”

The team had two crushing wins over Sierra Canyon and extremely close matches with Crossroads, Windward, and Marshall. The first time they played Marshall, they had tied sets 9-9 and lost by a matter of games. Archer came back strong the second time we played them and beat them by two games, propelling all three of the doubles teams (Chloe Mills ’13 and Rachel Magnin ’15 ; Rita Shrestha ’14 and Leila Taleghani ’14; Marcella Stanley ’15 and Sarah Boehm ’16) to qualify for league playoffs. Chloe, Rachel, Rita, and Leila got all-league recognition for being in the top four seeds of playoffs. Number one seeds, Chloe and Rachel, even qualified for CIFs.

The seniors Daniella Morrison, Nastasya Popov, and team captain Chloe Mills, showed great leadership and inspired the younger members to play their best. Gaby Sumpter ‘16 says as a member of the team she “really enjoyed getting to know girls from other grades and made real friendships.”

The team reported loving Chloe’s  motivational speeches at the beginning of each match that got them pumped up and ready to play their hearts out. The seniors will be much missed when they graduate.
