Bergamot Station Arts Center provides ‘connection’ to humanity through art

Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica served as a railroad station from 1875 to 1953, until its re-opening as an arts center, Sept. 17, 1994. Now, it houses galleries, theater and comedy performances, and more. Visitors can explore different galleries with varying concepts all in the same center, and there is no parking or admission fee to visit the galleries and businesses.

"It's been really rewarding to see the program grow," Roberts said. "I'm assistant director and flute section leader, and it's been great to see everything come together."

Poetry Allowed finalist Samara Gottlieb (‘28) recites “Universal Truths” by Shira Haus in the Poetry Allowed finals. In this two-round competition, the five finalists each chose one poem per round to recite for a judging panel. Gottlieb said she selected “Universal Truths” because she loved Haus’ use of “emotional shifts” and figurative language. “Poetry is something I've always really, really loved — writing and reading it,” Gottlieb said, “and I didn't feel like I was brave enough to share my own poetry, but recitation is something I've been really interested in, so I figured exploring something adjacent to a monologue. What's the harm in that?”
