Despite wildfires, the varsity soccer team has persevered.

The team won their first league game on Jan. 9, defeating Milken 1-0. Freshman Olivia Rosen scored the winning point of the game.

“It was really exciting,” Rosen ’21 said. “My team was really supportive, and they were cheering me on from the sidelines. It felt like I accomplished something.”

Co-captain Jenna Marks ’19 also said the game was a “good” way to start the season after winter break.

“With our first win in league, we are one step closer to qualifying for CIF, which is one of our goals for this season, ” Marks said.

Marks credited head coach Kim Smith as a “key” factor in helping the team have a positive season so far.

Kim Smith climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2017 and participated in a record setting soccer game to fight for female equality. The experience translates into her coaching, and she incorporates lessons she learned to help make the team “stronger.”

“I experienced a new level [of challenge on the trip], and it has prepared me for this season,” Smith said. “I get to share [what I learned] with the team. [I] let them know that together they can really meet any challenge and make it to the top if they work together.”

Due to the Creek Fire, the team missed one game and three practices. Nevertheless, junior goalie Sophia Fink said the team’s spirit remains.

“Even though there has been bad weather, playing through tough conditions has increased the cohesiveness of the team,” Fink said.
