Archer girls arrived at the Annenberg Community Beach House to hit the sand and play under the sun on April 24 for an opportunity to make the 2018 Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League [IBVL] playoff.

The varsity team played against Pacifica and Marymount. Although the Panthers fell short to Marymount, the varsity team still qualified for the championship by beating Pacifica.

Co-captain Andrea Campos ’20 and Stella Smyth ’19 played on team one, Bella Morgan ’21 and co-captain Gillian Varnum ’20 played on team two and Jenna Marks ’19 and Sarah Traenkle ’19 played for team three.

Archer competes in the Westside Division of IBVL because of the school’s location. However, once in the playoff, Archer will now play against schools from across Southern California.

This year, the Archer team has competed in nine league games.

“It is really nice to be able to be a leader for the new people on the team,” Varnum said. “It is really hard to run on the sand, [so I] just help them [and] be there for them.”

According to Varnum, the team accomplished one of their goals for the season, making the IBVL playoff.

“[Our] other goals include team bonding and welcoming new players to the team,” Varnum said. “[We want to be] really supportive.”

The team will be competing in the first round of playoffs on May 8.
