Tucked away on a quiet residential street just off Venice Beach, soft string lights glow their warm hues over a mix of indoor and outdoor seating. The effortless setting at 9 Dudley Ave. feels more like a neighborhood secret than one of Venice’s best seafood spots.
Dudley Market first opened in 2015 under owner Conner Mitchell and chef Jesse Barber as a hybrid market and restaurant offering grab-and-go items alongside a full dining menu. After closing briefly, the restaurant reopened in 2019 with Mitchell still at the helm but with a new focus: seafood-centered plates and the now-famous Dudley burger, according to LA Eater. Today, the restaurant leans into its strengths, with beautiful plating and great flavors.
A friend and I went Thursday, Jan. 29, to see if Dudley Market was really worth the hype.
The atmosphere is one of the restaurant’s strongest assets. The outdoor space feels intimate without being cramped, and it would be perfect for groups of any size. That said, the experience did not start smoothly. Despite checking in, we weren’t seated for about 30 minutes, though they did seem particularly busy for a random Thursday.
Once the food arrived, we quickly forgot the wait. The Peruvian scallops stood out immediately. Their texture was rich, yet light — almost creamy — and very fresh. The dish struck a balance between richness and brightness without feeling heavy and set the tone for the rest of the meal.
We ordered the kanpachi sashimi next, simple, yet beautifully executed. The tangy accents of the soy sauce cut through the buttery fish. The dish also included a brown, umami paste called yuzu kosho, which added another dimension without overpowering the clean flavor of the seafood.
Midway through the meal, the smashed cucumber salad offered a refreshing contrast. Drenched in a rich miso sauce with a subtle kick and topped with crispy garlic, the fish worked especially well as a transition from raw fish to warmer plates. Staying on the vegetable kick, the roasted berere carrots were one of the most surprising dishes of the night. They were sweet, and topped chimichurri, hazelnuts and fresh mint that brought a brightness to the denser dish. Although very different from the previous dishes, the flavors paired unexpectedly well.
The meal concluded with Dudley’s well-known burger. With a unique creamy dressing and arugula, it wasn’t a burger I’d had before, which made it memorable. The bun was light and sweet, and it was a great plate to share and end the meal with.
Suffice to say, Dudley Market feels like a place designed for sharing. There are no wrong combinations on the menu; in fact, the sauces felt so cohesive that I found myself almost wanting to mix them all together on my plate. The prices are that of a special occasion dinner, not an everyday choice. Especially considering the quality of seafood and the restaurant’s trendiness, their cost is unsurprising. With inventive tastes and thoughtful pairings, their menu flows seamlessly. It’s easy to see how and why the restaurant has remained a Venice favorite over the years.
